    Legend on Your Table

    Within the ChNPP site, there are two facilities which from a category of distinctive structures have evolved into the category of legends and myths. Two most famous buildings, one of which is a symbol of tragedy and the other is a symbol of victory, are Shelter (Sarcophagus) and New Safe Confinement (Arch).

    The personnel of Chornobyl NPP IT Department and Strategic Planning Department have combined these two unique facilities into “Арка AR”, a common element of augmented reality, and now any smartphone or tablet user can place them on their table very easily or visit the space under Arch without harmful health effect of radiation.

    For this you should do the following:

    1. Download from Play Market (link) or App Store (link) and install “Арка AR” application.
    2. Download Image Target (link) and print it or open Image Target at any other device.
    3. Launch “Арка AR” application and focus a device camera on Image Target and start your trip along the legend.

    Valeriy Seyda was appointed to the position of SSE ChNPP Acting General Director

    September 3, 2018 Igor Gramotkin relinquished duties of the General Director of the State Specialized Enterprise "Chornobyl NPP".

    In accordance with the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 777 dated 03.09.2008, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine implements the competitive selection and appointment of heads of the state enterprises.

    Till that time according to the SAMEZ Regulations approved by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 564, taking into account the requirements of Article 9 of the Law of Ukraine "On Permissible Activity in the Field of Nuclear Energy Use", the Chairman of the State Agency for the Exclusion Zone Management Vitalii Petruk signed a decree on assignment of the duties of Chornobyl NPP General Director to Valeriy Seyda, First Deputy General Director of SSE ChNPP.

    ChNPP holds the IAEA’s decommissioning workshop

    In the period from 27th to 31st of August, SSE “Chornobyl NPP” is holding the workshop of the International Atomic Energy Agency focused on the end state of NPP decommissioning and material release from regulatory control.

    The workshop became a place for sharing the experience of the representatives from 9 countries of Central and Eastern Europe having the operating nuclear power plants or implementing the decommissioning projects, the representatives from the lead specific institutes of Ukraine and NAEC “Energoatom”. Among the participants, the experts from Chornobyl NPP take a special place, the NPP which became the first and remains the only one in Ukraine under decommissioning.

    Commenting the workshop, Vladan Ljubenov, the IAEA officer, the expert in safe management of radioactive waste, emphasizes that currently a number of decommissioning projects is increasing across the globe and many of them are approaching to their completion. Therefore, the important thing is to share the experience, discuss approaches and problems related to determination of end state of the facilities and ways of its achievement.

    The Arch’s readiness for operation

    The Chornobyl NPP has received a Certificate of the State Architectural and Construction Inspectorate of Ukraine testifying the compliance of the completed facility “New Safe Confinement (NSC). Commissioning Stage (CS-1). License Package (LP-5). Design “Main Structure and Main Cranes System” with the design documentation and confirming it operational readiness.

    Obtaining the certificate has become the culmination of many years of hard work of Ukraine and the international community to implement the project of transforming the Shelter into an environmentally safe system, which became possible only through support of more than 40 contributing countries and donors of the Chornobyl Shelter Fund. Completion of work in the scope of the License Package 5 is a demonstration of modern technical capabilities, since the Arch is the largest of all built mobile land structures of 165 m in length, 110 m in height, 260 m in width and a total weight of 36,200 tons.

    NSC ventilation systems operation study performed

    Since August 17, the personnel of JV Novarka perform the studies of operating ventilation systems of the main capacity and annular space of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) in different modes of equipment operation.

    This work is carried out in order to implement the first stage of the Technical Decision "On organization of the ventilation mode of the single NSC-SO complex for the period of ventilation system testing and trial operation of the first commissioning stage (CS-1) of NSC" within the contract for design, construction and commissioning of NSC.

    At this stage of ventilation system operation study, the radiation monitoring of radioactive emissions into the environment through ventilation stack of NSC is carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Technical Decision. Also according to the requirements of the Technical Decision, the personnel of the Radiation Safety Shop of SSE ChNPP and the Service of JV Novarka perform additional radiation monitoring of the environment both within the space under the NSC Arch and within the area of ChNPP industrial site and beyond its boundaries.
