    RODOS — European system for decision-making support in case of radiation accidents

    On July 12, a press conference was held in Kyiv on the experience of implementing the RODOS system in Ukraine – the European system for decision-making support in case of radiation accidents.

    Mr. Ulf Rosengard, Project Manager of Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development – EuropeAid (Brussels), Mr. Wolfgang Raskob, Head of Accidence Consequence Group of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), Mr. Vitalii Petruk, the Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAEZM), representatives of the State Nuclear Regulatory Authority, National Nuclear Energy Generating Company “Energoatom” took part in the conference. Mr. Sergei Goncharov, Head of Information Technology Department, represented the Chernobyl NPP.

    The press conference was held within the framework of the Project “Extension of Decision-Making Support System in Ukraine for Chernobyl Exclusion Zone”, funded by the European Union. As EU experts and representatives of Ukrainian departments noted during the conference, during the last seven years the system has been implemented at each of four Ukrainian nuclear power plants and in the Exclusion Zone.

    Radioactive material theft prevention — task of drill at ChNPP

    An all-plant emergency response drill with radiation safety elements was run at the Chernobyl NPP site on July 10. A Plant Shift Supervisor, representatives of Emergency Preparedness and Response Department, Regime and Physical Protection Department, Radiation Safety Shop, Radioactive Waste Management Shop and other specialists of the enterprise took part in this drill. Besides, military personnel of the ChNPP Military Unit No. 3041 were involved into this activity.

    As per the legend, gamma-spectrometer calibration works were underway at the Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant (LRTP), during which there was theft of ionizing radiation source — radioactive material Cesium-137 was stolen.

    The drill started at 10:00 with the command of the Plant Shift Supervisor. Headquarters of the Site Emergency Response Manager promptly notified about strengthening of radiation control within the LRTP rooms. The access to and exit from the facility was strictly restricted. An emergency team of the ChNPP Military Unit No. 3041 arrived to the LRTP.

    Visit of TEPCO delegation

    A delegation of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) is working at the Chernobyl NPP on June 20-21. The TEPCO is known as an operator of Fukushima NPP in Japan. 

    The delegation includes high-level representatives of the TEPCO’s Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee (NRMC). This Committee was established by global and domestic experts after the Fukushima accident as an advisory body to the TEPCO’s Board of Directors. The Committee monitors and advises the TEPCO’s activities with the objective to achieve “Safe mind”, “Technology” and “Social communication”.

    The Japanese experts arrived to the Chernobyl NPP to study the experience of stable and safe work during the decommissioning stage. This day and at the meeting with the Chernobyl NPP top management they discussed the issues of nuclear safety culture, ChNPP engineering capability, human resource management, emergency response and tools for communication with public. During the visit the Committee’s members also visited the key facilities of Chernobyl NPP: Interim Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel No.2 (ISF-2) and New Safe Confinement (NSC).

    Common database for the individual dosimetric control

    In line with Order of the State Agency of Ukraine on the Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM) No.54 dated 06 March 2018 “On individual dosimetric control”, specialists of the Individual Dosimetric Control Laboratory under the Radiation Safety Shop (RSSh IDCL) and Information Technologies and Computing Systems Department (IT&CSD) of the SSE ChNPP, as well as the Automated Radiation Monitoring Control Systems Department (ARMCSD) of the SSE “Ecocentre”, commenced a full-scale vital joint work on creating the unified register of individual exposure doses of personnel of enterprises, institutions and organizations that undertake activities within the Exclusion Zone and Zone of Unconditional (Obligatory) Resettlement and are managed by the SAUEZM.

    The common database for the individual dosimetric control (IDC) will be created based on the software and hardware complex of information-analytical system of the SSE ChNPP Integrated Shelter Database (ISDB).
