    Chornobyl NPP hosts training for ICSRM equipment maintenance provided to operators and maintenance staff

    On February 8th, a three week training course started at Chornobyl NPP on “Maintenance of the Wälischmiller arm, the ZDAZ press, and the KAISER compressor”. The course is being provided by experts of the Belgian company ENGIE SOLUTIONS, and is financed from the governmental fund of Belgium.

    The above mentioned equipment which is the objective of the training course is installed at the Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management (ICSRM) – the facility intended for acceptance, processing and/or disposal of solid radioactive waste generated from ChNPP operation and decommissioning.

    WANO Workshop

    From 26 to 28 January, 2021, an online training course/workshop was being held, organized by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (hereinafter — WANO) together with the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Participants included representatives from South-Ukraine NPP, Khmelnytskyi NPP, Rivne NPP, NNEGC “Energoatom”, and Chornobyl NPP. The purpose of the workshop was introducing to the participants the concept of “Operational Decision Making” in nuclear energy, developed by WANO on the basis of guidelines, best practice and recommendations of WANO members.

    Chornobyl NPP was represented at the workshop by the Deputy Head of the Shelter (NSC) Operation Shop — Serhii Klepikov, and the Engineer of the Decommissioning Shop — Andrii Tortsev.

    The three-day programme of the training was intense and consisted of both theory and practice. The theory included review of the concept of “Operational Decision Making”, and various decision making types and principles. The practical part was intended for working out decision making using specific examples.

    Completion of “hot” tests at ISF-2

    The “hot” tests at ISF-2 site were completed on 17 December 2020.

    During the “hot” testing, ChNPP personnel performed all activities specified by the ISF-2 Commissioning Programme, namely:
    • transportation of 22 transfer baskets with spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from ISF-1 to ISF-2;
    • receiving of 186 spent fuel assemblies (SFAs) at ISF-2;
    • cutting of 186 SFAs into fuel bundles, and placement of 372 fuel tubes with these fuel bundles into two double-walled canisters (DWCs);
    • placement of two DWCs, filled with SNF, into the concrete storage modules for long-term storage over the course of 100 years;
    • management of the “hot” cell’s solid radioactive waste;
    • assessment of the biological shielding structures performance.

    Chornobyl NPP successfully completes transfer of spent nuclear fuel within “hot tests” at ISF-2

    On 14 December, in the presence of the IAEA inspectors, the second double-walled canister filled with spent nuclear fuel was loaded into the concrete storage module (CSM) at ISF-2 site for long term storage. Upon the completion of the transfer and loading process, the IAEA inspectors put their seal to the loaded CSM cell.

    “During the “hot tests” at ISF-2, 186 spent fuel assemblies were transferred to the facility, processed and placed to the storage area. Consequently, we have performed all the scheduled operations with SFAs provided for by the ISF-2 Commissioning Programme”, - said ChNPP’s Acting Director General Volodymyr Pieskov.
