During September 16–20 at Chornobyl NPP and Exclusion Zone, a training course was provided to the specialists for nuclear safety and nuclear event response from the United States of America.

The training was held under trilateral cooperation between Radiation Safety Shop of Chornobyl NPP, charitable foundation called Clean Futures Fund (well-known for long-term project “Chornobyl Dogs”; USA), and Technical Resources Group Inc. (USA) as well.

The Technical Resources Group Inc. (thereinafter TRG) renders the services relating to radiation event response, provides training and drills for rapid response services throughout USA and many other countries. Annually, TRG holds about 200 radiological training, trains thousands of emergency response specialists in USA and abroad.

Almost for 10 years, TRG holds the advanced one-week training course under Radiation Specialist program. On September 10-11, the delegation of the Belgian company TECNUBEL and the Institute for Radioelements (IRE-Elit) worked at Chornobyl NPP. The visit was part of a joint project aimed on creation of a pilot installation for chemical decontamination of small diameter pipes at Chornobyl NPP.

The experts set two main objectives for this visit. The first is to get acquainted with the measuring capabilities of ChNPP water-radiochemical laboratory. In future all the tests necessary to create the installation and maximize its efficiency (analysis of pipe materials, development of decontaminating solutions, etc.) will be performed in this laboratory.

The second task was to investigate the Chornobyl decontamination facilities being in operation. In addition to new decontamination facility creation Belgian experts are considering possible upgrading of the existing facilities with use of their own technologies. According to project manager Tarik Bouayad, during previous meetings Chornobyl specialists addressed with such request.

Cold tests, another important milestone in the Spent Nuclear Fuel Dry Storage Facility (ISF-2) construction project, has been completed. Their duration was almost four months, from May 6 to August 29.

Cold testing is a mandatory part of ISF-2 pre-commissioning test and consists of three main steps.

During the first stage the operability of the equipment of all major process systems and their ability to handle dummies of spent fuel assembly (hereinafter: SFAs) were tested. At the second stage of the test all auxiliary systems ensuring operation of the main ones were tested. The third stage of "cold" tests was aimed at identification of the maintainability of all ISF-2 equipment — whether its components and parts can be repaired remotely (without direct personnel involvement) in the case of their failure in the operating conditions of the facility.

All three stages of testing were supervised by a commission consisting of representatives from the Contractor, the Employer and the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine.
